All summer
This summer, you are invited into Sigrid Undset’s fascination with the Middle Ages – across several museums.
Her interest began when, at the age of 18, Undset discovered the Middle Ages through the art of Agnes Slott-Møller. It went on to shape both her writing and her life at Bjerkebæk, and today forms the basis for several of this summer’s experiences.
At Bjerkebæk, you can explore Sigrid Undset’s medieval world through:
In the exhibition A Modern Middle Ages, you will encounter artists who, like Undset, were inspired by the medieval period.
The exhibition explores the connection between Undset and the Danish artist couple Agnes and Harald Slott-Møller, and shows how the Middle Ages were reinterpreted in art around 1900 – and in our own time.
Undset herself visited Maihaugen to study architecture and craftsmanship.
This summer, you can do the same. Visit the open-air museum and experience medieval buildings such as Garmo Stave Church and Dagsgard Loft – and get closer to the history that inspired her. Read more about the medieval buildings at Maihaugen here.
