Bronze sculpture

All day

In the garden at Bjerkebæk, you can experience the bronze sculpture Dead Reckoning by the Danish contemporary artist Fredrik Tydén.

“Dead reckoning” is a navigational term describing the process of determining one’s position without fixed reference points. The title reflects a working method that is both carefully planned and risky, while remaining firmly rooted in the past.

Tydén’s art explores rupture and transformation, combining traditional craftsmanship with new technology. His works often begin with photography, which is digitally processed and eventually cast in bronze.

Experience the work of Fredrik Tydén alongside Sigrid Undset in the exhibition On the Pilgrimage Route to Nidaros.

Fredrik Tydén (b. 1985) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and lives and works in Vordingborg, Denmark. He is particularly known for his sculptural works, in which he gives new life to bronze through references to historic architecture and sculpture.

In 2025, he won the competition to design the new doors for the west front of Nidaros Cathedral. The project led to an in-depth exploration of medieval wrought-iron techniques, ornamentation, colour and themes, developed in collaboration with the craftspeople at Bygghytta at Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop, a National Competence Centre.
